I have always considered myself more a Democrat than a Republican. I thought Bill Clinton was the man, but that was mainly because he was a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, not cause he was pulling the young chicks in the office. I think that I agree with the primary ideas behing being a republican, like smaller government and lower taxes, but I run into serious problems when those people start mingling with the social conservatives who want to make sure everybody is doing it in missionary position for reproduction. I also have a real problem with the idea that it is ok to pour good money after bad into a black hole while denying poor children health care in our country. Health care is another sticky point. The fact that our health care costs so much more than everybody elses does, and nearly 20% of our country isn't covered, then that system pisses me off royally. The people who don't want it to change are the ones getting rich off of it. Besides, isn't the goal of health care to maintain a healthy population so that everybody can contribute to society? Sounds socialist I know, but I think it is. Here my support for national healthcare conflicts with my desire for smaller government.
So if those are the things I care about, I guess I need to figure out which candidate is the one that can gaurantee nation wide health care, stop the hemoraging of the national treasure into the black hole of Iraq, and other places (bloated agencies, etc.) and respect my civil rights to do as I please as long as I am not hurting anybody. Who is that candidate? I am not sure, maybe it is Hillary Clinton. Maybe it is Ron Paul, although some of his social views are a little too conservative for my taste, but hey, can't be a one issue voter right? Mitt? No way, can't vote for a Mormon because I am from Utah, and I know that if he doesn't do the Church's bidding while president, he will get excommunicated. Gee, country or heaven, we all know which will win that battle.
I hope over the next few months to jot down my thoughts on each of the serious contenders (except Mitt because I already did two lines up). I really don't know who I would vote for right now, but I am leaning towards the Democrats. I am really tired of the republicans howling about who hates homos the most, but I will give the serious runners a look.
So it is time to figure out who to support to bring us back from the brink, restore our credibility in the world, and make sure our economy doesn't make like Argentina's and head for the toilet.
